Updated Onboarding Toolkit for Supervisors and Managers
The Onboarding Toolkit for supervisors and managers was recently updated to provide best practices and templates for creating a supportive, engaging start for new hires.
This aligns with key goals identified in our Campus Staff Experience Survey, UC Davis Health's CommUNITY Feedback Survey and The Hiring Experience initiative. The toolkit redefines onboarding with a focus on belonging, integration and growth—key areas identified to improve staff engagement.
In response to feedback highlighting the need for better communication flow, career development and clear growth paths, the toolkit includes a new 30-60-90-day plan template. This approach better helps supervisors guide new hires through their first months by providing a structured schedule to start learning and building relationships.
The toolkit has been integrated into the People Management Essentials Developing and Retaining Talent course to ensure supervisors are familiar with its content and utilization. The contents have also been reframed to prioritize the importance of connection and engagement for new hires, moving beyond a checklist of logistics to highlight best practices for introducing new staff to the organization, their teams and their specific responsibilities.
These updates directly support recommendations from the Campus and Health feedback surveys, including encouraging supervisors to discuss career paths with their teams and setting expectations around professional development as part of performance discussions. It also ties into The Hiring Experience initiative, which seeks to streamline hiring and accelerate productivity with more focused onboarding processes. These improvements provide supervisors with the tools and guidance to ensure new hires feel welcomed, informed and prepared to grow.
